Okay let’s be honest here. Email newsletters aren’t exactly THE most fun thing in the world. But they work! And since it is the only list that we actually own I have been inspired to spend more and more time invested into making sure ours is effective.
I’ve spent a ton of time, money and energy with different email providers and various popup and opt in plugin technology. But none of them have ever inspired me to write about them because frankly…they ALL had problems. Like major irritating problems.
Two months ago I got tipped off to a new product called ConvertKit and let me tell you…I am hooked!
Here is a breakdown of the top reasons I love them.

#1 Good Basic Triggered Opt In Technology PLUS Email Provider
In all my years of working with emails and pop ups I’ve always had to run two separate providers to really get a good experience. I used OptinMonster for most of my work but did a few months trial of LeadPages as well. And then I used everything from MadMimi to aWeber to GetResponse over the years for our email provider.
What I love about ConvertKit is that I can keep everything in ONE place. No more arguments between my email provider and the opt in plugin support team about why something doesn’t work. It just WORKS.
Want a pop up with exit intent? Got it.
Trigger a pop up from a button? No problem.
Do custom opt in’s with custom lead magnets? Yup it can do that too.
And of course all the regular sidebar opt in’s and footer opt in’s etc.

#2 Landing Pages
Landing pages are included in ConvertKit. This is an awesome perk for selling your own products or driving email subscriptions. I don’t personally use them for anything right now but I love knowing that this software scales with me for when I do want one of those. This is by far one of my favorite feature of ConvertKit. The sequences feature makes writing email courses a complete breeze! You can easily click in and out of different messages and draft them all in one cohesive thought process.
They also provide some great prompts to you to help guide you through creating your first auto responder series without making it a huge deal like taking a 100 day course that you will never actually finish. Quick, simple and straight to the point.
#3 Automations (aka Magical Powers)
ConvertKit shines in it’s ability to segment your list. We all have a general list but if you are trying to reach just a portion of that list how the heck do you do that? Want to send an email everytime you publish a blog post?
Automations are where it is at. If you are familiar with IFTTT (If This Then That) a popular automation site, this is a similar format.
I am most excited about this built in functionality with ConvertKit because as a young company I know that we are going to see more and more options in this area over time. They have set themselves up to grow easily in this area.
#4 Auto RSS Feed with Approvals
I big fat puffy heart RSS emails. But sometimes I wish I could customize the emails a bit more so it’s more personal and not so….automated. But I never remember to actually send them so I inevitably go back to letting it auto send.
Enter ConvertKit’s genius rss feed setup. It automatically pulls your feed and drafts an email for you (INCLUDING all your images and your full recipe!) and then it sends you an email alerting you.
You then get to REVIEW everything. Usually what I do is just keep the first image and the link to the post and write a quick little personal intro to the recipe.
But if I am pressed for time I just delete the recipe and all but the first image and hit send!
Oh and if you want you can set it up to pull all your posts in one big batch so if you do a weekly newsletter it will pull them all on say Friday and then you can edit and send it on out. SO SMART!
#5 Visual Analytics
I love that I can see a visual breakdown of which opt ins are creating results in one sheet. So see the darker lines at the top of the right hand columns? Those are for the sauce printable opt in that we recently added. As you can see we could easily tell that this was a hit with the readers!
#6 No Double Counting Followers
With many email providers if the same email address is subscribed across multiple lists they count as a follower FOR EACH LIST that they are on. This can end up double charging you if you maintain more than one list or more than one site.
Convertkit counts per email address which I adore. So if you subscribe to our food blog and this blog, I only pay for you once 😀
Things I Don’t Like About ConvertKit
I think it’s always important to share my irritations with a software so you can make a good call on it. So here are the cons I have found.
#1 It can be more expensive.
I find it 100% worth it for us in our stage of business and the fact that it just works….but it is more expensive than other email providers. See #6 as to why this might not be the case though if you are currently on a double counting provider.
#2 Some Quirks
We discovered that using a triggered pop up on the same page that you use an exit intent pop up can currently only trigger one pop up. So we had to make sure the copy on the pop up worked both as an exit intent pop up and as a click triggered pop up.
#3 No Custom Date Ranges on Analytics (yet!)
Right now you can only see the monthly overview for analytics. It would be very nice to be able to do a custom date range to see at a glance which opt ins are working the best.
But after reaching out, they have confirmed this is a feature they want and are working on!
#4 Limited Point and Click Customizations on Opt In’s
The opt in’s that are available are somewhat basic in terms of customizations compared to some companies. Colors, text and images are straightforward.
BUT (and I must emphasize this point) they are all incredibly simple to style with basic CSS which is not always the case. I’ve spent hours trying to code css for other companies optins and this is very straight forward.
Take away: If you don’t end up liking exactly how an opt in looks it would be a cheap hire job to get exactly what you want on your pop up to look like.
#5 Limited Fancy Email Templates
Convertkit thrives on basic emails. Text and a few straight forward images. If you are looking for super fancy image heavy magazine style newsletters they aren’t your best option.
#6 Relatively Young(ish) Company
Convertkit has started taking the email marketing world by storm so when I first checked them out I was a bit skeptical since I had never heard of them before. But as soon as I dug in and watched the process in action I was sold! I hesitated for a minute not sure about their new presence but after reaching out and seeing just how excited and responsive they have been I am confident they are here to stay.
ConvertKit Review Conclusion:
I’m ridiculously happy and impressed with Convertkit and encourage you to take a look at them. I love pretty much everything I have seen and the founder himself has been super responsive to improvement ideas that I have stumbled upon and submitted.
And the company itself? Well—it’s growing aggressively which a fantastic sign.
